Hammer Toes

Hammer Toes is the name given for the smaller toes of the foot becoming bent at the first joint on the toe.  Most commonly Hammer Toes are cause by the type and size of shoes worn or the way in which the foot presses the ground in walking or sports.

Symptoms of Hammer Toes include;

  • Bent Toes
  • Pain in the foot
  • Redness and Swelling in the toes
  • Corn or Callous
  • Difficulty walking and wearing shoes

If you are suffering from Hammer Toes you are likely to be in some pain.  There are some quick and easy things you can do to help reduce the pain at home.  Our initial advice is to choose your shoes carefully.  Flat shoes are best with a wide toe area that gives your toes space.  You might choose to wear a protective pad or prop on the toe to help ease the pain.

As each person will have a unique hammer toe we would recommend making an appointment to see our podiatrist.  He will be able to advise you on the right treatment for you which may include toe splints, strapping the toe or prescribed insoles.
